Humdrum

"Let me take you for granted
Drift while you're talking
Bathe while you're downstairs
And chat on the phone

Fall asleep before bedtime
Dance in the hallway
Forget your birthday
And shrink all your clothes

Did I say that out loud?"

I absolutely love the song Humdrum by The Corrs. I find the way it talks about love and "happily ever after" absolutely hilarious and as close to reality as any love song can get.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-romance, bitter nor do I think of Valentine's as an occassion concocted by profit-hungry opportunists. I'm just realistic. I just celebrated my 5th anniversary with my dearest boyfriend and we had the most romantic date ever (a day at an out-of-town spa and dinner at antonio's) and I realized that we don't have the all-consuming love that novels and movies sell (can't eat, can't breathe, can't sleep - basically can't function like a brainless twit without the other person) but what we do have is love that is steady and comfortable.

For me the perfect love is when you know that you can always count on someone not to kill dragons or rush off and fight duels for your honor but rather to be there when you need someone to talk to, when you're sick or simply when you just need someone to hug you or hold your hand.

The perfect guy doesn't need to have a shining armor, a really huge white horse or the most expensive car - he doesn't even need to think you're the sexiest or most gorgeous woman in the world but he will still be there with you even when you're being the biggest bitch in the whole universe. He'll tell you when your clothes don't match, when you've got something between your teeth (because only god knows why anyone would want a boyfriend who won't tell you those things and let you walk around looking stupid) and he'll be absolutely comfortable with you just as you're so comfortable to be with him. You can put your hair down, eat as much as you want, not wear makeup, burp, fart or talk about the most disgusting things not because you don't care about what you look like or how embarassing some things can be but because you're secure with the fact that he loves you no matter what you look like.

It's the stuff of everyday life that never quite makes it to the movies and romatic novels being gobbled up by women everywhere but it's what counts the most. You know, we all can't be movie stars and there are already way too many drama queens out there.
